Membership

Become a member of IASR for a challenging and unique opportunity to be an active member in an international network of high-level scholars in suicidology. A one-year subscription to the Academy’s journal, Archives of Suicide Research, is one of the many benefits of regular membership.

There are three categories of IASR members: Student/Junior members, Associate members and Regular members.

NOTE: All membership applications must be reviewed and approved by the Membership Committee and IASR Board.

Student/Junior members

Student/junior members are current graduate students at the doctoral or master’s level who are interested in suicide research under the direction of a thesis/dissertation advisor or mentor.

Benefits of student membership

Student members

  • pay no dues
  • are invited to the meeting at a reduced student rate
  • receive the IASR newsletter
  • are eligible for IASR Star Awards

Eligibility criteria:

  • Current doctoral or masters students (must provide evidence of current enrollment)
  • Currently engaged in suicide research under the direction of an advisor/mentor (please provide list of publications or other demonstration of research activity)
  • 1-page statement of interest in becoming an IASR student member and current research interest (e.g., thesis/dissertation)
  • Letter of support from thesis/dissertation advisor

Associate members

Associate members are postdoctoral fellows or early career researchers (i.e., MD, PhD, ScD, PsyD, etc.) who are engaged in suicide research

Benefits of associate membership

Associate members

  • pay reduced membership dues $25-40 (depending on the country category)
  • can subscribe to the ASR journal at the reduced IASR fee
  • are invited to the meeting at the reduced member rate
  • receive the IASR newsletter
  • are eligible for IASR Star Awards

Eligibility Criteria for Associate members

  • Current postdoctoral fellows, early career researchers, or clinician-researchers (i.e., MD, PhD, ScD, PsyD, Nurse practitioner-researcher, etc.) – Within the first 3 years of completion of terminal degree
  • Currently engaged in independent or mentored suicide research
  • Must provide a one-page statement of interest in becoming an IASR associate member
  • Must submit a curriculum vitae and have at least one first authored or two co-authored publications (in suicide prevention/research).

After 3 years of being an associate member, the individual will be considered for regular membership by the Board –Depending on number of publications in suicide prevention/suicide research


Regular Members

Regular members are individuals who are engaged in ongoing research on suicide, either directly or as advisers, reviewers or consultants in an academic institution or equivalent.

Regular members

  • receive a print copy of the journal
  • have access the electronic version of the journal at no charge
  • are invited to the meeting at the reduced member rate
  • receive the IASR newsletter
  • are eligible for IASR Awards
  • are eligible to vote in the IASR elections and at IASR business meetings

Eligibility Criteria for Regular members:
The person should be an outstanding and internationally recognized researcher in the field of suicidology as indicated by publications in peer review journals.

  • The research need not necessarily be empirical research, but can include theoretical, ethical or legal research work.
  • No history of scientific misconduct.
  • Must provide a one-page statement of interest in becoming an IASR regular member.
  • Must submit a curriculum vitae.

Regular membership dues:

  • 1 year: $150 USD
  • 3 years: $400 USD (12% reduction)

All materials received will be reviewed by the Membership Committee, and the applicant will be notified by letter of the Academy’s decision.

If your application is accepted, you will be sent a link to pay your membership dues.
